It is the holiday season and the focus is on parties, gifts and food for many people. The pressure to enjoy yourself and make the holidays “magical” can be difficult for our elderly loved ones; especially when their family members are remote and their spouse or partner has passed on.
Gifts and treats are of secondary importance to having someone who is just “there.” The season is full of memories of the past and sometimes these memories can be painful or sad for elders who are missing friends and others more than usual. Spending time with your elderly loved ones just visiting and listening to them can be tremendously comforting to them.
